Citrus salt

A few months ago I wrote a review of Sourced Grocer for On the Menu. It's a gorgeous little cafe/grocer that opened recently in New Farm.  The food is fabulous and I already have a favourite - smashed avocado on sourdough toast with labne. It's absolutely delicious. The only thing that could make it any better, would be a little sprinkle of citrus salt. When my sister saw I was making the salt she suggested the match and I couldn't agree more.

Citrus salt

Apart from dusted over avocado toast this salt would brighten up a plain piece of seafood or fish, add a zing to a risotto or give a bowl of steamed veges a little some thing special. It also makes a great gift and I assume it keeps for a while considering salt is used to preserve food. Its so quick to make there's no excuse not to try it out.

Orange and lemon

Start by spreading the zest on a plate and leaving it for an hour or two to dry out.

A whole lot of salt

Pour all the salt into a large bowl.

Combined

Add the citrus zests to the salt.

Citrus salt

Stir it all together.

Bagging it up

Package it up.

Citrus salt

Enjoy!

What do you think this would go nicely with?

It's so quick to make too. Perfect for anything last minute (although it's better the longer it has to 'develop').

I remember reading that recipe on Jaden's site years ago, but never got around to making it. Good to know it works, Claire, thank you! :)

Great gift idea Claire! And I can imagine so many dishes where this would work well :) I made a salt too but it's quite different to this but I really enjoyed how simple it was and what a great gift idea it was!

It's such a simple idea I can't believe I've never done it before. Just to make dinner time a bit more exciting it would be great to have a little bit of flavoured salt on the table.
