Self raising flour is a pretty essential ingredient in baking. It's also something I never buy. Why? Because it's so easy to make & means not having to store multiple flours.
It is simply regular flour with a leavening agent added to it.
Basically, self-raising flour is a flour that creates a rise in your baking so you don't end up with dense, flat cupcakes.

To make self-raising flour you will need:
- Plain flour - also known as all-purpose flour. You can se white or wholemeal/ wholewheat depending what the recipe calls for.
- Baking powder - can be purchased at any supermarket.
Substitutes For Baking Powder
Don't have baking powder? You could also use:
- ½ teaspoon bicarb per 1 cup flour.
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda with ½ teaspoon cream of tartar and ¼ teaspoon cornstarch per 1 cup flour.
How To Make Self Raising Flour

Step 1 - Prepare your flour and baking powder.
Step 2 - Combine the flour and baking powder. The ratio is ½ cup flour to 2 teaspoons of baking powder.
It's best made fresh each time you're going to use it rather than as a big batch.
Tip
For extra fluffiness, sift the flour and baking powder together.
How To Test If Baking Powder Is Still Good
Self raising flour isn't going to work if the baking powder has lost its power. Here's how to check if it's still good:

Step 1 - Pour some hot water into a bowl or cup & measure out 1 teaspoon of baking powder.
Step 2 - Tip the baking powder into the water. If it bubbles then it's still good to use. If it doesn't then it's time to buy more baking powder.
Recipe FAQs
