Spoil Mum this Mother's Day with one of 10 Mothers Day cake ideas that cover you from super sweet indulgent cakes to healthy wholefood cakes.

10 Mother's Day cake ideas to suit any diet

What better way to spoil mum on Mother's Day than with cake? All the recipes are pretty simple and guaranteed to make mum smile, well they'd make me smile at least.

I once got the date of Mother’s Day wrong. I was on my honeymoon in Thailand and this was back before FaceTime was really a thing and calling internationally was more of a challenge than it is now.

I was so proud of myself figuring out how to call my Mum and so disappointed when she said ‘thanks darling but you’re a week early.’

Oops, my bad. I’ve never forgotten which weekend Mother’s Day is since then at least. I guess now I’m a mum I’ve got more reason to remember it.

Years ago, my job for Mother's Day was always making the cake so I have a lot of Mother's Day cake ideas under my belt.

This year, I'm on salad - my pumpkin and couscous salad has been quite a hit in our family celebrations this year.

If you've been designated chief dessert/cake maker, I have 10 Mothers Day cake ideas for you. I've divided it into indulgent and wholefood cakes (that are still delicious of course) so I think there's something for everyone and every sort of diet!

10 Mothers Day cakes

The not-so-healthy ones

Cinnamon pound cake

Cinnamon pound cake

I can never go past any cake that has cinnamon in it. It's probably because it reminds me of my grandma and her cinnamon tea cake but it is always a winner for me.

This recipe is nice and quick - you just throw all the ingredients together in the food processor.

Chocolate spiced pumpkin bundt cake

Chocolate spiced bundt cake.

I love the pretty colours in the icing drizzle (love me a good icing drizzle) in this one. It's another recipe you can throw straight into the food processor.

Vanilla almond cake with lemon drizzle and raspberries

Vanilla almond cake with lemon drizzle.

Wow there seems to be a theme here. Again, this one you can make by throwing all the ingredients in together and blitzing them up.

Best ever chocolate mud cake.

The best ever chocolate mud cake is my all-time absolute favourite cake. It has never had a bad review from anyone and a must-make if your mum is a chocolate lover.

Tropical cake with yoghurt icing

Tropical cake with yoghurt icing.

This is a good one to make if you have a very active passionfruit vine like we have at the moment. The yoghurt in the icing cuts the sweetness nicely.

If you've never made a pound cake before, after seeing all these recipes I think you might have to. You don't have to use a bundt tin, you could use any tin with a whole in the middle or it also works well with a 20cm round or square tin.

Healthy Mother's Day Cakes

Ok now on to the healthier versions. Now I'm not going to say these are so healthy you could eat them for breakfast, but they're a better option than the ones above if you're looking for something not quite so sugar-laden, or to meet certain dietary requirements.

Carrot and banana cake via www.clairekcreations.com

Carrot and banana cake with macadamia icing.

I guess you could call this a sort of healthy-ish take on hummingbird cake and the macadamia icing is nice and creamy but not too sweet.

Flourless dairy free cacao cake via www.clairekcreations.com

Gluten and dairy free chocolate celebration cake.

This cake probably wins the award for the prettiest cake I've ever made. You don't have to go all out and cover it in edible flowers but if you really want to please mum go for it.

You can purchase edible flowers from your local fruit shop (usually) or ask the florist. You need to make sure they haven't been sprayed with anything nasty if you're just using regular, non-edible blooms.

Raw coconut macadamia cheesecake

Raw coconut and macadamia cheesecake.

I'll never forget the first time I tried this one. My older son was just a few weeks old and my sister brought be a slice for morning tea.

I was in that want-to-eat-everything phase of breastfeeding and it was so very welcomed. It's a very filling and delicious cake.

Lime and blueberry cake with coconut via www.clairekcreations.com

Gluten-free lime and blueberry cake with coconut.

This is the delicacy I whipped up for our first son's naming ceremony a few years ago when I didn't want a morsel of sugar or anything not wholefood to cross his lips (oh how things change - my rules are probably the same I just have someone to debate with me at the other end).

Not one of the kids recognised it as 'healthy' and everyone really enjoyed it.

I'd love to know if you make one of these. Please tag me on social media @clairekcreations and have a wonderful Mothers Day!
