A couple of weeks ago when we had our big couples (plus a few bubbas) long weekend at the coast, the messages started flying earlier in the week. Can you guess what they were about? I’ll give you a hint – you eat it. Yep if you guessed food you were correct. Of course, despite the abundance of food shops on the Sunshine Coast, we couldn’t make the trip without taking more than enough food to feed the 11 of us for at least the long weekend.
Do you know where this is going? Yes I used the trip as another excuse to bake. Mum has made the coast and banana bread rather synonymous to me so I had to make some sort of version of her favourite morning treat. Seeing as I have so many banana bread recipes here already, I added raspberries and passionfruit and left out the sugar just to spice things up. It wasn’t missed.
Instead of sugar, I used honey. In place of some of the flour, I added oats and replacing the butter, was a little olive oil. The result was a dense loaf that wasn’t too sweet but tasted just like an icing-less cake – that is, like a treat but really it wasn’t all that bad for you. I had to laugh when I came back in from taking the above photo to see my friend Twinnie telling off her husband.
‘She might not have finished the photos yet!’ she said, slapping his hand away from the platter. Don’t my friends know me well? No-one eats until they get the photographer’s all clear.
I’ve seen a lot of passionfruit recipes lately that tell you to strain out the seeds and discard them. I think that’s crazy talk. The seeds add such a lovely crunch and you’re throwing away half the fruit if you leave them out (which is like throwing away gold at the moment).
There wasn’t much of the loaf left for me to take home on Monday but I did manage to sneak a few extra slices into the freezer for my morning tea throughout the following week. It made the perfect sweet treat with a little bit of bonus nutritional value. Enjoy!
What about you? Is there a food you associate with certain places you go or days of the week/year?

You’re welcome Julie!
Delicious! That looks and sounds so good! I do miss banana bread in our local living lifestyle, but might have to make an exception over summer! Food bring all the memories for me!
Oh yes I think you might need to make an exception.
I love banana bread, this is so pretty with the raspberries in it!
Thanks Laura!
We’re on our 8th bag of mangoes from Dan the Mango Man. John’s dad loves mangoes so we have some for breakfast every day. Can you make a bread with mango? :)
In the meantime I’ll try your sugarless bread. It looks fantastic, Claire.
I’m so jealous Maureen!!! I haven’t had my first mango for the season yet. I assume you could?
Discard passionfruit seeds?! You’re right, crazy talk! They’re the best bits!! Great recipe :)
I know right?
Yum I do love banana bread without extra sugar. Dk’s trick is dried cranberries, they’re so sweet you wouldn’t even want extra sugar! At the moment it’s definitely mangoes and Summer. I can’t eat one without thinking of Summer sunshine and relaxation!
Ooh that’s a good idea! I haven’t had my first mango of the season yet. I’m hanging out for cherries too!
What a lovely looking loaf. I would like to be growing a passionfruit vine as they used to be in every good Aussie’s backyard so they can’t be too hard to grow and because in the shops they’re like you say, priced like gold xx
Let’s hope I can keep it alive to fruit! x
