It started with an Aldi trolley.

Well no actually it started with some silent cursing at my husband for putting roof racks on the car which meant I wouldn’t fit in the car park and had to park out on the street which means quite a walk with a full trolley.

If you just want the recipe for a seriously delicious, warming turmeric latte then scroll down to the bottom. I will say - you’re missing out on a rather entertaining story.

Anyway, I trudged in and did my big shop then had an extremely successful checkout experience where I beat the checkout girl.

I received the ultimate in Aldi commendations when she told me I was the first person to ever beat her.

You might want to try no bake chocolate coconut slice.

Now if you’re not an avid Aldi shopper I had better explain.

Aldi doesn’t offer the luxury of having your bags packed for you and gently placed on the counter for you to put in your trolley at leisure. Oh no, at Aldi it’s a sport and you have to be on your game.

First you must be strategic in the order in which you place your items on the conveyor belt.

I start with the heavy things as they’re first into the trolley then end with the delicate items.

As soon as it’s your turn you have to race in and align your trolley (face in) then the real fun begins as items come whirling at you at warp speed.

I find it works best to keep your eyes a few items ahead so you know what’s coming and you can mentally assess the space in your trolley and assign placement of items.

There is no room for error and one wrong move or missed item can result in an avalanche of groceries and the ultimate in Aldi embarrassment.

Yes it is one of the highlights of my month.

After this particularly successful shop (I also got organic beef mince half price!) I was pushing the overloaded trolley along the uneven footpath when I hit a hole and it tipped sideways.

Not wanting to spread the contents of my strategically-packed load of shopping all over a main road I used all my strength to right it, hurting my wrist in the process.

You might want to try this healthy choc nut biscuits.

It had been hurting on and when I moved it certain ways ever since and I am embarrassed to say that was 6 months before I did anything about it.

I was then in a splint for 6 weeks with weekly physio.

Moral of the story - don’t ignore things. I personally a) couldn’t deal with it and the thought of having to go to appointments/organise babysitters etc and b) felt like an idiot going to the doctor for a sore wrist.

How does this all link to my turmeric latte?

Well, turmeric is good for inflammation and my physio said I need to hit this with everything I can to try and make it better and avoid surgery.

Also I ordered one at a cafe a few weeks ago, loved it and have been craving them ever since.

Here are some actual facts & tips about turmeric from my wonderful naturopath friend Shannon from Mums and Bubs Nutritionist:

  • Fantastic anti-inflammatory properties
  • Great for digestion
  • As it is fat-soluable, using almond milk boosts absorption
  • The pinch of black pepper also assists in absorption

So there you go, a good excuse to enjoy this delicious and nourishing cup of goodness.

I made mine using my high-powered blender which heats if you blend anything for long enough. I don’t recommend using any bullet-style blender.

You can make this by just grating the turmeric and ginger, heating it all together in the pan then straining it, returning it to the stove and heating then frothing following the instructions below.

Enjoy!

Hello Clare, firstly thank you for your recipes.
Regarding turmeric, do you know that it is ridiculously easy to grow. Just put a piece that you purchase from the greengrocer in the ground and it will grow with very little care. I have just pulled out over 500g of tubers. Plenty for lattes.

Hey Claire, sorry to hear about your wrist.... Here's to quick healing!
I just wanted to write to thank you for your posts. In so many ways your post are like quick convos with a friend. I travel for work, so I haven't cultivated my friend ships like I should; and to be honest, I just don't have that much in common with many of my peers... Sooooo the turmeric latte looks so delicious!!!! I love green drinks, and live decided to reduce the coffee, and the sugar.

I'm going to pick up the ingredients and let you know how it turns out!....

In the mean time, thanks and keep the posts coming
