I used to call it the mouth or floor test. If something is good, it made it to the mouth.

If it wasn't so appealing it usually didn't even get a second look before being casually tossed off the tray.

Yes this is how mealtimes used to go in our house when the boys were little (and I'm about to experience it all over again with our little lady).

These days I guess it's similar they just use words to express their dislike (often rather harsh!) and it often drives me a little bit nuts.

I do love the challenge of coming up with something that passes the test though.

Originally I made these crackers for myself as a healthy snack. Have I told you about cocktail hour?

Just in case you’ve forgotten, for as long as I can remember there has always been cocktail hour in my house where you have a drink of something and a little snack (some chips, crackers, nuts).

This tradition came with me when I left home and Will took it up willingly (no pun intended) although these days, when we eat dinner by 6pm, cocktail hour is more a holiday thing.

Ingredients

  • Mixed chia & flaxseeds - ground in the food processor to a powder
  • Mixed seeds - sesame hemp, poppy seeds, pepitas, nigella (whatever you like)
  • Kale powder - optional - made by drying kale in the oven and processing to a powder
  • Water
  • Sea salt - we like Celtic sea salt

Anyway, I try to keep my ‘cocktails’ healthy but like to mix them up a bit and when I saw this recipe I thought they’d be perfect.

As soon as they were dry I popped one in my mouth. I was holding it between my teeth when I picked the big boy up and he promptly ripped it from my mouth and shovelled it into his.

It was an instant success. He was about one at the time.

Since then I’ve also made a beetroot version by processing the meal with half a raw beetroot. I loved the added sweetness and so did my little guy.

These make a delicious snack on their own or the perfect gluten-free cracker. Enjoy!

What about you? Do you have cocktail hour? What traditions do you continue from when you were growing up?

We don't have cocktail hour but we do have 'Wine O'clock'. And yes, having something to go with the wine is 'hand-in-hand'. What great crackers. I have only ever made crackers once. These look super-tasty xx

That sounds pretty similar Charlie! I thought you'd be right into making crackers. New Year's resolution perhaps? x

We don't have cocktail hour but my parents did. When we lived in Victoria we often had the neighbours over in the summer for cocktails by the pool. I don't know why I've never done it - always worked through it, I suppose. :)

These crackers look good on their own or with a piece of cheese or dip.

Hi Claire, love your blog. You use to have restaurant reviews. We are coming to your Brisbane in May. Any suggestions where to go what to eat, see. We won't have car so maybe somewhere close to Cbd. Thanks in advance

Hi Sherrie. It depends what sort of food you like. I'm a bit out of the scene since I had my little one but the best dinner I've had in a while was at Public in the city. There are great restaurants on James Street in New Farm which is pretty close by. Also Pony at Eagle street was really good dinner and there are a few more casual places there too. I hope that helps!
