How to make a herb garden - easy DIY project.

My husband has called me a hoarder in the past.

I'm not a hoarder in the traditional sense but sometimes I have a little problem with throwing out things that I think might be useful.

Years ago when our first bubba was on formula, I just couldn't part with the tins thinking they might be good for something - like formula tin herb gardens!

Spray paint is one of my favourite DIY tools but since I found Rust-o-leum universal spray paint I can't stop the spraying.

These paints are amazing.

They are undercoat and topcoat in one and give a nice smooth shiny finish.

So - how to make a herb garden from formula tins - you will need formula tins (obviously), spray paint, soil, herbs, some sort of sheet of something to protect your work surface and something to stand the tins on while you spray.

You'll also need something to poke some drainage holes in the bottom of the tins.

I used the drill but a nail and a hammer would do the job too.

After you've got the drainage holes it's time to paint. Balance the tin on top of something so you can get around the base and spray away.

I had to do two coats on mine to cover up the writing.

I managed to create a nice piece of art on the drop cloth.

Once they were dry it was time to get planting.

It literally took 2 minutes to tip in a bit of potting mix and shove in some seedlings.

Yes shove is the technical word.

I gave them a nice drink of water then moved them to the front yard to photograph.

I must have looked quite a sight down on my hands and knees, bottom facing the road taking photos.

Oh the things I used to do to get the right shot.

I think these would make lovely quirky gifts.

These are very attractive and a great way to be ready for pesto or bruschetta at a moment's notice. Very clever!
