If you listen closely today you'll hear the distinctive sound of tinnies (beer cans) cracking open, champagne corks popping and the sizzle of snags (sausages) on the barbie (BBQ) because today is the day we Aussies like to celebrate. Today is Australia Day. It's the day we like the remember as the start of our young country when the first fleet arrived back in 1788.
For me it means more than that though because on this day in 1918 my grandma was born. If you've done the maths (or looked at the header) you'll have worked out that that makes today her 95th Birthday!
I tell you, if I am just a little bit as glamorous, clued in, witty and wonderful as this woman when I hit old age I will be happy. She's forever telling me about things I don't know and at me to learn more about football so I can talk about it with Will. I don't think there's a subject she couldn't converse on (she's even catching onto what blogging is all about!).
She still lives on her own, does everything herself (except bake, I take care of that!) and starts off my tomato bushes for me until they get to a stage where I'm unlikely to kill them. See what I mean? Wonderful!
This year instead of all the family gathering at once we're having a few smaller gatherings, because who doesn't like their Birthday being dragged out? Today mum is hosting a lunch and her brothers will join in the celebration. My Tia Lee (in the back) lives in Spain but she's coming out in May so no doubt we'll celebrate again when she's here.
On Tuesday, which is also Guppy's Birthday, I'm having Guppy to lunch with my sister and cousin and I'll cook up a feast fit for a queen. She is the Queen of the family after all.
Happy Birthday Guppy!
xx

Such a lovely story!
My nan is the same age and doing very well also! She taught me to cook as a child and can talk about any subject too. They built things to last in the good old days ;) I hope I got her genes :)
Claire says
They sure did! I hope I did as well. Would love to still be going strong at that age. It's easy to forget how old she is.
