Is there anything worse than going to all the effort of baking a cake then you go to take it out of the tin and a big portion of it sticks to the pan?

The solution to this problem is learning prepare your cake tins quickly and easily so there's no cake left behind.

I'm going to show you how to grease and line a round cake tin in this post but this method can be used for any tin with a flat bottom.

I can still remember greasing and lining my tea cake tin with my grandma when I was little. The cinnamon tea cake was the first cake I ever learned from her and I have the fondest memories.

Why grease & line your tins

Some recipes you can get away with just greasing your cake tin (you can also sprinkle it with flour or almond meal) but if you really want to make sure your cake doesn't stick to the bottom of the tin, then lining it with baking paper is your answer especially for cakes like chocolate mud cake.

Do you have to use butter?

Unless I am making a dairy-free cake, then I always use butter to grease my cake tins.

Alternatively, I sometimes use coconut oil or olive oil.

You can use the paper for coconut oil and for the olive oil you can use a pastry brush or I just use my fingers to rub it around the tin.

No baking paper to line your baking tin? No problem!

Just rub the tin with butter or oil and sprinkle with flour (or almond meal).

Shake it around the tin (over a sink) to coat and then shake out the excess flour.

How do I line other shaped cake tins?

You can use this same method for lining a round cake tin for any shaped cake tin with a flat bottom.

Just cut a big enough sheet of baking paper to cover the tin then place the tin on top of the paper, trace around it and then cut it out like in the video below.
