5 tips to create awesome video on your iPhone

I can remember about six years ago I was at my chiropractor (who was more like my spiritual guide as well) and I mentioned to her that I’d been thinking about making some videos for my website but I was nervous.

‘What’s the worst thing that could happen?’ she asked.

Good question… I might connect with more people? I might love it? It might be awesome?

Yep all of the above.

Since then I’ve created 100s of videos for my business. It’s never been something I’ve had an issue with but when I first started out I made it a lot more complicated than it had to be.

I used my fancy camera, I had a remote and a special tripod and edited it using a special editing program on my computer (and it still wasn’t all that good).

These days I use my iPhone and a special mic (read on to find out more) and edit on my phone and my videos are sooo much better!

Yes a lot of the improvement has come from practice but there are a few key things that I have done to go from the first to the second video and that's what I'm sharing in my 5 tips to create awesome video on your iPhone.

Sound

Good quality sound is so important for good quality video. Think about it. If you press play on a video and the sound is crackly and there's loads of noise in the background, are you going to keep listening?

You don't need to go out and spend money though.

The first step to improving your sound is popping your headphones into your phone. You can put the ear buds in or just tuck it into your shirt so the microphone is out. This will make a massive difference to your sound.

If you want to take it up a notch, I invested in the Rode Smart Lav+ Mic and I love it. It makes the sound professional (I use it for my podcast too).

Lighting

If you compare my first and second video, one of the most noticeable differences is the lighting. It can make such a difference to the quality of the end product and it's one thing you can't really edit after you've recorded.

Make sure that you're facing the light rather than having the light behind you.

Try and avoid down-lights unless you want some lovely bags under your eyes.

Steady the camera

If you're doing a video for any length of time, unless you have super strong arms that can keep super still, you'll want to steady the camera. Yes you can get a fancy tripod, or you can just boost it up on some books.

It does't matter how you do it, just make sure it's still.

Look at the lens

There's nothing worse than watching a video where the person presenting is looking at themselves! It's tricky at first, but when you're recording, look straight into the lens and only there.

Edit

Not all video needs editing but if you did make a mistake or want to cut anything out. You can do it right on your iPhone. Just open up the app, click on create project, add your video and away you go.

You might need to play around with it to work out the features but once you get the hang of it it's so very easy. Then you just save the video and upload it to your favourite video host or straight to your social media. I use Vimeo for video hosting.
