I thought that making baby wipes was something difficult.
I also had visions of the wipes ripping… yeah I think you get where that one was going.
Then a friend told me she’d been making homemade wipes for years.
So I tried making my own wipes with simple, natural ingredients.
I am a convert!
Why I love these
- Easy to make - I’m talking about 5 minutes to make a couple of packets and the hardest part is a bit of cutting.
- Simple ingredients - It can be really hard to find the list of ingredients in commercial wipes.
- Strong - no sticking your finger through them.
- Effective - they do the trick even if you didn’t realise there was a dirty nappy to change for a little too long (you know what I’m talking about).
- Gentle - perfect for sensitive skin.
- Inexpensive - even compared to the cheapest wipes you can get.
- They’re really good on my sensitive skin & don't cause skin irritation.
- Nasties free - no harmful additives or fragrances.
- Less waste - no packaging like individual packets of wipes.
The unexpected bonus was that for the first year in as long as I can remember, I didn’t get winter eczema or cracked fingers.
Some years I get it so bad my fingers bleed (yeah gross I know).
It took me a long time to learn that there are actually some pretty nasty chemicals found in inexpensive baby wipes.
The nastiest of which is ‘fragrance’ which is basically a word that means chemical concoction we don’t have to tell you the contents of because it’s our ‘secret’ recipe.
My own homemade baby wipes use paper towel as the cloth.
Unfortunately, some paper towels do contain bleaches and other chemicals.
If you want to completely avoid these, then you could use bamboo cloths.
Obviously they would need to be washed hygienically if you’re using them for number twos.
Alternatively, you could just use them for wees and use the paper towel, disposable version for poops.
Now I know that paper towel can have nasties in it, but, I still feel like it’s better than some of the chemical-loaded baby wipes, plus… they cost a lot less to make than buying store-bought wipes

What you need
- Roll of paper towels (tough one) - Viva is the best brand I've found for the job
- Boiled water - preferably filtered over regular tap water
- Castile soap
- Coconut oil – leave this one out if you're using them for cleaning rather than baby's bottom (please don't use baby oil - that stuff is petroleum derived and terrible for baby's bum)
- Optional a few drops of pure essential oils (I no longer add essential oils but used to use a combination of lavender and tea tree oil)
- A plastic container (I use a 1kg yoghurt tub or Sistema does a 1L square tub that fits perfectly)
- Sharp knife
How to
- Slice the roll of paper towel down the middle so you have two rolls about the size of toilet paper. I find a regular butcher's knife best for this as a serrated seems to make a big mess of the roll.
- Squash each half into a tub.
- Make up the baby wipe solution by mixing the warm water, castile soap, coconut oil and essential oil and divide evenly, pour over each of the paper towel rolls.
- Leave to rest for a few minutes then pull the middle paper towel roll out and pop the lid on your baby wipe container.
FAQs
Yes you sure can make reusable wipes like this.
Small piece of towel or a packet of thin baby flannels in the homemade wipe solution are a more eco-friendly and less expensive option in the long run.
They do involve a lot more washing though.
I like to make up a tub of reusable wipes for cleaning. I just throw them straight in the washing machine after using.
I used to just pack a little zip lock bag or small airtight container with diy baby wipes in the diaper bag for on the go diaper changes.

Hi Claire,
Just wondering if these could be used as makeup remover wipes, maybe without the essential oil?
Kind regards,
Lydia

I don't see why not Lydia. You could still use the essential oil. Lavender or tea tree or rose/geranium are what I use on my face. x
