Let’s face it, it’s not a calm, peaceful way to spend an hour so I’ve created two essential oil blends for watching The Handmaid’s Tale – one to keep you calm, one I’d give to Offred.
Essential oil blends for watching The Handmaid’s Tale
I’ve never been moved so much watching a fictional TV show as I have watching The Handmaid’s Tale.
I have cried heaving sobs watching it. I could almost feel the emotions coming through the TV screen.
Last night I was talking with a friend about how we’d prepare for the emotional hmm… turmoil?
Disturbance? … that we’re going to be put through when season 3 of The Handmaid’s Tale starts and she mentioned she’d have wine at the ready.
I mean just take a look at the trailer for season three of The Handmaid’s Tale…
Not being a drinker myself, I joked ‘I’ll have to make myself a blend of oils for the diffuser and put it right next to me.’
I like to take things one step too far… and so essential oil blends for watching The Handmaid’s Tale were created.
The essential oil blends
I consulted my Emotions and Essential Oils book for coming up with these blends because there will be a whole lot of emotions flying around tonight I am sure.
Blend #1 – For the viewer
The first blend is for those watching the episode. It’s a combination of Juniper Berry, Peppermint and Red Mandarin.
To make it, place 3 drops of Juniper Berry, 2 drops Peppermint and 2 drops of Red Mandarin in your diffuser and put it on about 30 minutes before viewing. Keep it going until after the episode finished for maximum effect.
So why this particular combination of oils?
Juniper Berry is ‘the oil of night.’ It ‘assists those who fear the dark or unknown aspects of themselves.
It encourages feelings of protection, peaceful dreaming, courage and self-awareness.
I don’t know about you, but I always feel a little bit wary going to be after an episode of The Handmaid’s Tale so I thought an oil that helps quell our fears and sleep soundly was an essential.
Peppermint is ‘the oil of a buoyant heart.’ It ‘brings joy and buoyancy to the heart and soul, invigorates body, mind and spirit and remind individuals that life can be happy and they don’t have to be controlled by fear.
If you’ve ever watched a single episode you’ll know why I had to include peppermint in the blend.
The show has a way of making you feel quite low and depressed by the awful circumstances a lot of the characters find themselves in. Let’s not that that away with us. Let peppermint help.
Red Mandarin is ‘the oil of childlike perspective.’ It ‘invites individuals to see life through childlike eyes, appreciating the sweetness, wonder and innocence in life … children are quicker to move on and bounce back after encountering challenges or set backs.’
I’m starting to feel like maybe I need these blends just in my daily life. So basically, this one will help you stop dwelling on the episode and transition back into everyday life where you appreciate your freedom and little moments of bliss.
Blend # 2 – For Offred
I’m not going to go into the details of the show. If you haven’t watched it before, I strongly encourage you to. It’s set in a Dystopian society pretty much in present day somewhere in America.
The main premise around it is that society has gone all wrong. Fertility rates are so low children are incredibly rare. Food supplies are dangerously low… basically it’s where our planet is headed if we don’t step in and do something.
So these people who started Gilead -the fictional place society – I’m going to hope, thought they were doing the right thing going completely back to basics but somewhere it went quite wrong and fertile women (anyone who had given birth) were taken prisoner.
SEASON TWO HANDMAID’S TALE SPOILER ALERT WARNING
Offred, the main character at the end of season two, had the opportunity to escape but instead chose to stay and fight in an effort to rescue her daughter who is also trapped in the society.
This blend is to encourage and support her on her quest and includes Peppermint, Ginger and Cloves.
I would probably make this in a roller for her to slip under her cloak – in a 10ml roller add 6 drops Peppermint, 4 drops Ginger and 2 drops Clove and top up with fractionated coconut oil.
As it says above, peppermint essential oil reminds people that they don’t have to live in fear and brings joy to the heart, something she would definitely need fighting back in a place like Gilead.
It’s also great for giving you a burst of energy.
Ginger essential oil is ‘the oil of empowerment.’ It ‘teaches that to be successful in life, one must be wholly committed to it.’ It empowers individuals in taking complete responsibility for their life circumstances and infuses a warrior-like mentality.
‘No longer waiting for outside circumstances to change, they choose their own destiny.’
Could it be any more perfect for Offred on her mission?
Finally, Clove is ‘the oil of boundaries.’ It supports individuals in letting go of victim mentality and helps them to stand up for themselves, be proactive and feel capable.
Clove is ‘helpful for breaking free of patterns of abuse by restoring the victim’s sense of self and helping them regain strength to stand up for themselves.’
So basically Clove oil is going to help Offred to break free from her oppression and stand up for what she believes in no matter what.
I think this needs to be my new perfume.

Good luck Offred!
If you’re watching The Handmaid’s Tale tonight, I hope these blends can get you through.
