Chili oil

This year, instead of buying gifts for Christmas, I am making as many as I can. Leaving my full-time job and a full-time income might have something to do with this but I really enjoy making things myself. I have so many chilies growing I didn’t know what to do with them but when I saw these cute bottles the idea struck … chili oil!

It’s not hard to make at all. You need to use dried chilies for the oil or it will go off. I dried mine in the oven. Place them in a single layer on a baking paper lined oven tray and cook at 100C for about 2 hours. Check on them regularly and turn them half way through. When they’re done, open the oven slightly and let them cool in there.

To make the oil, put the chilies in the bottle, pour in olive oil, put on the lid and you’re good to go. A perfect gift for a foodie friend or staple for your pantry.

Over the next few weeks you’re going to be getting some very interesting made up recipes from me. After looking through our pantry, fridge and two freezers I’ve decided we’ve got way too much food so I’ve set myself a challenge. No non-staple (fruit and veges basically) purchases for at least two weeks. I’ll be getting a little help with ideas from the Simple Savings website but other than that my imagination is my limit.
